Lawn Mower Survival Strategies Needed
I have my own apartment, but part of the deal is mowing the building's lawn every week. And because my landlord's lawn mower broke a long time ago, I have a deal with the neighbor that I'll mow her lawn and mine if I can use her lawn mower and gas to fill it.

The problem? I HATE mowing the lawn.

It's hot; I hate the feeling of sweat on my body, especially on a hot, humid day when it isn't evaporating the way it's supposed to. This is why biking and swimming are my favorite types of exercise.

It's noisy. I can hardly hear myself think. At least it's a constant noise. If it were unpredictable noise, I wouldn't be able to do it at all.

And there's the smell: Exhaust, cut grass, the occasional pile of dog crap my neighbors have missed. (They do pick up most of them.)

Plus the bugs that land on me, plus the itch of grass clippings stuck to my legs, plus the vibration of the lawn mower in my hands... and then on top of it all the lawn mower stalls on a particularly heavy patch of grass and I have to drag it over to the path and re-start it, which annoys me a lot more than it ought to...

Eventually, all that combines, and I'm in a state of mild heat exhaustion plus overload, and it's very, very unpleasant. If I finish one lawn, I'm usually to the point where I have to lie down on the floor to recover. I don't get out of breath--it's not very heavy exercise to mow the lawn--but by then the heat has gotten to me and everything's just too much.

So lately I've been avoiding this... I just did my own lawn yesterday; but my neighbor's is still sitting there, obviously in its second week of growth. I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm a bit lazy. She works every day remodeling her house, while I sit and do calculus in front of a fan.

There has to be a way to get myself to tolerate all this sensory craziness a little better. Maybe a mental trick, maybe a workaround I'm not considering... I don't want to let my neighbor down but I'm afraid that sooner or later I won't have the willpower to push through it, and somebody will be disappointed.

Have you thought about earplugs? At least that would reduce the noise. Sorry I don't have any other ideas for the other sensory issues, except maybe try to mow in the early morning or evening when maybe it won't be so hot.

Is there any chance you could convince your landlord to buy a reel mower? No loud engine, no need to buy gas, and they're good for the environment. Also, you could mow early in the morning because you wouldn't have to worry about waking people up.

We've had a reel mower for over 25 years. The do work well, if you make sure to get them sharpened every so often. I usually call them "beer powered mowers" (just drink the beer after mowing the lawn).

You just have to make sure to get a good running start at some weeds.

Another, better alternative is a lightweight electric mower. It has a motor, but it is very quiet. There are those that have a long electrical cord, and then there are some that have rechargeble batteries. I just remember mowing my dad's house with the one with the long electrical cord many eons ago... I had to be very careful to not mow over the power cord.

An electric mower is easier on the senses but besides the cord, the motor especially with any older model isn't as powerful. That can make the mowing take longer in the heat. It would also be more difficult with those heavy patches that make the gas-powered mower need to be restarted.

Some mower maintainence can make the job easier and cause less vibration; clean oil, fresh spark plug keeping (or at least clean the spark plug),keep the under carage free to spin the grass out more freely, and blade sharpening can all be inexpensive and not a lot of work especially considering the work it saves. Maybe you could get the landlord to spring for that.

To keep the motor from stopping use a half cut or less. In other words make the path you are cutting only cover part of the uncut grass. This takes more steps but it looks better and the job goes a lot smoother. Also restarting the motor causes more of the exhaust fumes.

Long pants or socks can keep the grass off your legs but contribute to the heat. I don't know.

For the heat keep a cold water pan or bucket nearby and dunk a bandanna or wash rag in it and wrap it around your neck.

Dogs crap....what can I say. :)

Hope you find ways to make the job easier, Ed

We had a reel mower too. They work nicely. The bad part is you still have to sweat and deal with the bugs and the smell. Mowing is such a nasty chore, I agree. Do you have air conditioning? I hope so.

Find a wide brimmed straw hat and the best set of ear plugs you can find. Wear long pants and a light, long sleeve shirt. It will keep you slightly cooler.

I want to second the advice on the heavier patch of grass.

What is it about mowing a yard that is so devastatingly hard? One word, inconvenience.

All of the physical stuff aside, it is time consuming.

Every suggestion I have seen so far is good advice, but you have to be in the right mindset.

Just do it, and stop being whiny about it.

I mow my 2 acre yard with a push mower...

Why are you even here?

Um, yeah, "all of the physical stuff aside". When the physical stuff is so overwhelming that you lose the rest of the day, the rest is a little bit trivial.
